Understanding Orthodontics
According to Webster’s Dictionary, “Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with correcting irregularities of the teeth”. These corrections are made by altering the position of teeth and/or jaws.
Benefits of Properly Aligned Teeth
- Improved bite for chewing.
- Prevention of tooth loss due to an improper bite.
- Healthy gums and surrounding bone
- Healthy temporomandibular joints (TMJ)
- A pleasant smile and increased feeling of pride
Best Age To Begin Treatment
In the majority of cases, the ideal time to begin orthodontic treatment is when the patient is actively growing, usually the early adolescent years. This is when the jaws are developing most rapidly.
In certain situations, orthodontic problems can be more easily corrected at a younger age (6-10 years). Such treatment may reduce the severity of a problem and minimize or even eliminate the need for comprehensive treatment at a later date.
Since each patient's needs are unique, the length and type of treatment can only be determined after a complete evaluation.
Adult Orthodontics
Today more than 20% of orthodontic patients are over 18 years of age. Crooked teeth, improper bite, crowding, and protrusion are now being corrected in many people regardless of age. The latest dental technology has made orthodontic treatment easier and less intrusive through new bonding techniques and smaller appliances. |
