Brushing with Braces
The fact that you are getting braces demonstrates you know the importance of good dental health. With your braces on, brushing will be a little more difficult, so these pointers may be helpful to you.
Brushing with Braces: is different! It is more difficult, but the new method will become part of your routine after you practice it for several days. Ideally, you should brush thoroughly after each meal and just prior to bedtime.
Toothbrushes: A small soft bristle toothbrush is recommended. We will provide you with a travel toothbrush, which will allow you to brush when away from home.
Toothpaste: The type you use is up to you. It is the brushing, and not the toothpaste, which cleans teeth.
Tooth brushing Method
A. Begin brushing the outside surfaces of the teeth (the side of the teeth next to the lips and cheeks) with a circular motion. Make the circle large enough to brush both the gum line and the teeth. When brushing the braces, angle your toothbrush down and brush on top of the brackets and then angle it upward to brush the bottom side of the brackets. The bristles of the toothbrush should also slide under the archwire to remove plaque that lodges between the teeth.
B. Brush the inside surfaces of all teeth (the surfaces next to the tongue) in the same manner.
C. Brush the biting surfaces.
D. Brush behind all back teeth.
E. Brush the surface of the tongue vigorously.
Water-Pik: This is a nice aide in dislodging food particles from the braces but will not clean plaque from the teeth and braces. The water-pik should be used in addition to, not in place of, good brushing.
Flossing: Flossing your teeth with unwaxed floss is highly recommended. Obviously, this too will require more time and effort with braces.
When you have brushed properly, your breath should be fresh and your teeth and braces should shine.
